POWER

I define power or leadership as a role that makes you take decisions on behalf of others. Power can have both positive and negative effects. When one has power over someone or something, they can use it to benefit themselves or others. Industrialization showed how new technology had power to change the lives of all who used it. As for the American Revolution, the British had power over the Americans until the Americans revolted. Since the British were the ones that colonized America, they said they deserved to ask for taxes. There are also many ways power with one could defeat another. For example in globalization; the mono culture had power over all the indigenous cultures for many more people had been exposed to the mono culture rather than the others. Power can be used for negative reasons for in Rwanda the powerful HUTU community had power over the weak TUTSIS. This as we know, turned out to be a horrible genocide. When the Europeans came to Africa, they were technologically advance and therefore had the power to take them to the United States to work as slaves. One component of power is that anyone who posses it has a chance of being corrupt. When one has power, he or she decides to do things differently. This difference could make you take steps that wouldn’t be good for you but since you would hold power, you won’t need to go through any consequences. There have been many cases in which a leader seems to be following the rules of a community or country but breaks these rules behind the curtains. Many kill for power and many are aggressive to posses it. Overall, I would state that power is nice to have, nice to use, but if used negatively, considered VERY VERY RUDE!!!

Globalization Cartoon

Some of the main elements of this cartoon are a father and a daughter talking about the child's homework. This cartoon is talking about globalization and how it has affected children along with adults. The child wants to out source her homework to India where people will do her homework for her in return of very little. I believe that this cartoonist thinks that out sourcing along with globalization has affected everyone. Even young adults and children are thinking like businessmen and want to find good and cheap labor. I believe the cartoonist feels this way by the face of the child. She seems to say that if everyone can do it, why can’t I? Out sourcing is a part of globalization and seems to be a profitable practice for all who do it. Maybe the newspaper the father is reading could have headlines of something like, Google shifts their main search engine to India. Overall, this cartoon shows a major aspect of globalization and how it is spreading.

Skills from the Population Project

Few of the most important aspects of the population project or UbD are organization, researching, and presentation. Organization can help me later in life because when I will work with research, organization can help me whether I am in school or at work. Ubd helped me with organization because I had to sort out what information to use and why I had to use it. Being able to research information is very helpful in your work for you might have to find information on a topic that is mostly unknown. In Ubd I was able to locate information and find its proper source and that was a great achievement. Whether doing Ubd or a project from work, I will have to present what I found. In Ubd I presented my information as a portfolio. These are some skills I was exposed to while working on Ubd.

Sameness vs Equality

Equality and sameness are two totally different ideas. Sameness is when one idea is similar to another. Equality is mainly used when talking about people. For example sameness could be used when talking about characteristics of people. Say, one person feels angry and so does another that would be sameness. Equality is when we talk about rights and how all people are equal. In Animal Farm, sameness is what all the hens felt when their eggs were being taken away. All the hens felt a similar feeling. In The Giver, all people go through stirrings, a similar feeling when you turn twelve. In The Giver, equality comes into play when we are exposed to the community where all people are equal. In Animal Farm, there is an inequality between the hens and the pigs. The pigs get many more facilities and have control over all the others.

Feedback

At the age of 18 or 21, one would be considered an adult by law. You become an adult when you yourself can take decisions for yourself and you have the power to accept its consequence. When you are responsible for your actions, that is when you are an adult, and then it doesn’t matter whether you are 5 or 50. This is what I believe about adulthood.

When you are responsible and capable to accept the consequence of your actions, you are considered an adult. An adult doesn’t mean that you don’t make mistakes. An adult means when one does a mistake but then resolves it and tries not to do it again. It could take you many years to make you an adult. In the book THE GIVER, you become an adult at the age of 12. I believe that you don’t have an age to become an adult but your perspective of problems decides whether you are an adult or not.

You are never useless for a community. If you are young you get to learn from your elders, and if you are old you can teach. No community is too small to not make you a part.

Cartoon Feedback

Some of the main visual elements of this cartoon are two parents asking their child how his day went while eating a meal. The issue in this cartoon is that their son has a blog but the parents aren’t bothered about reading it. The parents just want to know what their son did at school. I believe that the artist thinks that blogs are useful and that parents shouldn’t overlook them. I believe so because of the child’s face that is dumbstruck at how his parents think of his effort of making a blog. This cartoon is ironic because technology was meant to make communication easier but in this cartoon it is preventing the child from talking to his parents. The artist could have used the background more efficiently.

An event on the way home!!!

On my way home today, I found that there were around 70 policemen guarding the Chinese embassy. We had to change our route because of the security. Unfortunately, the Chinese embassy falls in our route and as for their security, the police have closed the road. The Chinese embassy has asked for protection from the Tibetans because of current events. As the Tibetans have been trying to gain independence from the Chinese, the rule that allowed the Chinese to have power over the Tibetans celebrated its 49th anniversary. This stirred the conflict between the Chinese and the Tibetans. I saw four policemen grabbing two men who looked liked Tibetans. They were going to go to prison. I believe that due to the conflict between these two groups of people, Delhi shouldn’t have to suffer by changing their way of life.

Opinion on Vonnegut's statement

Vonnegut is right about his opinion on humans and technology. Humans created the computer, but one idea to keep in mind is that you can erase memory off a computer, but you can’t erase a memory off a human. Computers are useful although they can give major technical difficulties. These are a few reasons why I believe Vonnegut is right.

Quarter 4 Goals

I believe I met most of my goals for quarter three except I believe that I could have s[ent some more time in getting AR points. I put in extra effort for my Socratic Seminar preperation for the past 3 months and I believe they were my best.

I believe that some goals for 4th Quarter would be:
1 Having my UBD project done before the deadline.
2 Putting in some extra effort in Science.
3 Concentrating more in High School.

Jihad or Holy War

In my understanding, Jihad is an idea of killing innocent people in the name of god. I believe that conflicts arise because one group or person disagrees with another. Jihad means Holy war. Out of any understanding, how can a war be considered holy, it is killing innocent people for the fault their leader attempted.

Cold War Debrief

My group in the game was Europe and Africa. The strategy I used to win was that we should give combos. Our countries were not good but when we gave it in a combo, USSR was willing to pay big money. I wanted to sell all my countries and so I sold all my countries and made many points for my team. This was my strategy.
I would have to say that my team did win in the end because we did have the most points amogst all our opponents. This was in the game, but in the real cold war, the real losers were USA and the USSR. These two groups wasted so many valuable resources in the cold war and in the game. All in all, the two superpowers were the losers.

Visual Communicator Post

When I work on any multimedia, some thoughts that go by my mind are that maybe I could add some pictures, or I could cut down these words. When giving information, stretching it out too much could be a pain. Suppose that you are making a brochure on an idea and there may be some statistics on it. Giving away numbers upon numbers would just bore the audience away.

Using visual communicator was a great experience for me although there were some parts that went wrong. Maybe some concepts we could have worked on would be not messing up the V-Screen and not rehearsing too many times. Some things that went good were that we got everything done on time, and we went step by step.

Some tips:
Don’t give up on technology
Be ready on time
Don’t put too many words

Animal Farm Movie Critique

There was a big difference in the movie and the book ANIMAL FARM!

Some of these differences are that in the movie Old Major is shot where in the book he wasn’t. The song BEASTS OF ENGLAND that was the main song in the book was not so in the movie. The movie changed the song to something else. My next reason is quite important because there was no Clover. Clover is important in the book and not having her in the book is a major issue. Jessie took the role of Clover and so the movie did have a figure that would be supportive of the other animals. When the humans came to fight the animals, they didn’t all have guns. In the movie, all the humans had guns where in the book only three were present. In the movie, Mollie leaves later than in the book. Towards the end, the book ends with Napoleon giving a speech but in the movie new farm owners turn up. Overall, I would think that the book was more interesting where the movie did a great job exaggerating the animal’s living conditions.

Animal Farm Post

I would say that my character is kind of like Napoleon only for his good qualities. Napoleon is a leader and one who would do anything to have his idea heard. Napoleon sacrifices many things to make the other animals happy. He would also work harder for them (Orwell pp.37). Napoleon is very trustworthy and everyone has hope in him. They also say that whatever Napoleon does is right (Orwell pp 37). The animals believe that Napoleon is a great leader (Orwell pp 55). These are some reasons why I believe i am like Napoleon.

Militaries in countries

I come from mainly two backgrounds. One is British and the other is Indian. In England, it is not necessary for one to join the army. India also doesn't enforce any such law. I believe that it is an honor to serve the country. India has a very large army and if everyone serves for two years each, India would have the largest and the biggest army in the world. Britain doesn't have a large army although if they have a law of serving in the military after college , it would also have a very good army. All in all it would be good if these kind of laws were enforced.

THE KING IS DEAD!!!

From my perspective, this is a relevant game. This game showed us how the colonists in America had to live with taxation without representation. Since we were the colonists in the game, we didn't have many chances to earn money. Therefore, we had no money to pay the taxes. Many of us were sent off to Georgia and some of us went on the treason list. The king was an exceptional example of tyranny. He ruled us in a manner of how King George the third would have treated the colonists of America. There was a lot of injustice with us. Our rights were taken away from us and we were taxed for no good reason. Towards the mid game some had self-determination to try to steal money from the king. We tried many times and failed. After the king caught us we were put on the treason list. After the king died we had all the money to ourselves and all the Taxes were repealed. THE KING DIED!!!

The 43rd war post

My partner and I strongly believe that this war took place in El Salvador. One reason is because tortillas and beans is a typical Central American dish. Another reason is that El Salvador has been having political problems for the past 12 years. 43 wars is possible to happen in that time span. Most of El Salvador’s population is Christian and in the book, whenever one used to die they put a cross gravestone with it. These are some reasons why my partner and I believe that this war took place in El Salvador.

The Declaration of Independence

When it becomes necessary for politics to separate the people, they should have a reason for doing it. All men are created equal and when the government doesn’t believe in that, it is our right and duty to change the government. Safety and happiness are your rights. You can only change the government when situations get really bad. King George has been unjust to us and it is our right and duty to change his government.

King George the third did much unjust with the colonists. Some of them were taxing them without their consent, for taking their lives and burning their cities and homes, cutting of their trade with the rest of the world. There were also some more such as, fighting against them, for taking away their rights, and also allowed many soldiers to do whatever they wanted to. For these reasons America changed their government.

We have tried all we could, by signing petitions and every time we did that, we were answered by injuries. It is our right to take away the rule of King George the third. Therefore, we the representatives of the United States of America, with the consent of all colonies and their people, come to an agreement that we have the right to be independent.

To be a Slave Response

I believe that some evidence given in this book are truth and fair. Julius Lester gives citations after every interview that he got from the library of congress. The library of congress is in itself a very trustworthy source. I believe that the part about keeping the slave in the galley is true. Ball pp. 159-160. Some parts are true and some parts are bias. The conditions of the journey were not good but I am sure that there would be a reason into bringing them. They say in the book that some conditions weren't as bad as the others. Some wanted to go back, Charley Williams Botkin pp.110. Picture by http://www.sitemason.com/files/faEsSY/slaves.jpg

Great Powers Game Debrief

1. We were Great Britain and it felt great building our empire. I think that those countries that had a good army at the start of the game had quite an advantage because they didn't have to worry about other countries attacking them. Our country had a lot of economic points and there for throughout most of the game we were the richest.

2. I believe that buying armies and industries was fairly important. 1 army was two navies and colonies went with industries.

3. We spent a lot on armies and industries. if i was to play this game again, then I wouldn't bother buying any navies.

4. Austria Hungry were our best allies. They stuck with us till the end. They were the only ones we could trust. Germany and Italy back-stabbed us in the end when we needed help.

5. I learnt that conflict can end up into a great war. I also learned that many conflicts can arise when you just have simple misunderstandings. Finally, I learned that it's better to stay out of conflicts because you end up losing your part of the share along with the others.

Goals for Quarter 3

For the goals I set for quarter 2, I think that met most of my goals. I have started to concentrate more, and i have started to write neater. I can still work on getting better grades on my tests.

Three new goals for quarter 3 are that I would like to work more on my social studies skills, finish my AR before the deadline, and I would like to work on introducing new ideas and questions to my group in Socratic Seminars. I can start reading ahead of time to finish my AR, do better in social studies projects, and I can make a better prep for my Socratic Seminars.
